Safety Topic - Utility Locating Services
This month’s Safety Topic is about notifying proper agencies to locate underground utilities prior to digging or excavating. This applies to both the work that is performed by Carnow Conibear and our subcontractors (i.e. excavation, soil borings, well installations, etc,.) and your home projects (i.e. planting a new tree, installing underground sprinklers, fence posts, etc.). State law requires you to contact DIGGER (within City of Chicago) or JULIE (outside City of Chicago) before you start any digging project, no matter how small the project or how deep you plan to dig.
There are convenient ways to reach DIGGER or JULIE:
- Call Before You Dig: 8-1-1 (Nationwide toll-free number for locate services)
- a) City of Chicago - Call DIGGER: 1-312-744-7000
b) Use online service https://ipi.cityofchicago.org/Digger - a) Call JULIE’s toll-free number: 1-800-892-0123
b) Use online service https://www.illinois1call.com/
Here is a quick video from JULIE https://vimeo.com/309343967
These are standard marking flags/colors used to identify underground utilities.
It is always better to be safe.
