Why Homes Should Be Tested for Asbestos

July 25, 2014- Asbestos, a material that contains thin, microscopic fibers, has been widely used in construction because of its high tensile strength and flexibility. It’s resistant to heat, chemicals, and fire. But when handled, it can release particles into the air.

Asbestos is extremely dangerous when airborne. If inhaled, the fibers can become trapped in the lungs can cause lung cancer, asbestosis, or mesothelioma.

The use of asbestos has decreased, but asbestos can still be found in many commercial and residential settings. Some materials that may contain asbestos include insulation materials, linoleum, drywall, roofing, and even floor tiles.

Environmental testing should be done before any home or building renovation or before any project that may disturb asbestos-containing materials. Air, water, and particulate samples are analyzed in a lab. If asbestos is found, there are two solutions. The first is repair, which involves either covering or sealing the asbestos to prevent it from releasing fibers. Full removal of asbestos by specialists is the other option. When moving into a new home or building, always test for asbestos beforehand.
