Sierra Club Proposes Ban of Single-Use Plastic Bags in Mid-Missouri

November 13, 2014- Shoppers in Columbia, Mo., may have to pay an extra charge when they check out at the grocery store -- unless they bring their own shopping bags.

The Missouri Chapter of the Sierra Club proposed an ordinance at an October City Council meeting that would ban single-use plastic bags. The ordinance would require shoppers to bring their own reusable bags or pay for paper bags at checkout.

The proposal comes because of the harm single-use plastic bags cause in the environment. If the ordinance passes, Columbia would not be the first city to implement a measure like this. In September, the state of California banned single-use plastic bags. Cities in Arizona and New Mexico have also banned the use of plastic bags.
