OSHA Provides Tornado Preparedness and Response Guidelines

June 14, 2013- Given the recent extreme weather events all over our nation, it would be wise to brush up on the Occupational Safety & Health Administration's (OSHA) tornado advice to help protect yourself, your employees and your business.

The OSHA website's Tornado Preparedness and Response Page reminds us that "Tornadoes can occur with little or no warning. Taking precautions in advance of the storms, such as developing an emergency plan, learning the warning signs, and monitoring tornado watches and warnings, can help you stay safe if a tornado occurs in your area."

Resources include:

Preparedness: Develop an emergency plan

Checklists: Be sure your preparations are complete

Response/Recovery: Deal with potential hazards

Additional Resources: Tornado Safety Checklist, Power Outage Checklist, and related posts from FEMA, NOAA, the American Red Cross and NIEHS.

OSHA states, "Each employer is responsible for the safety and health of its workers and for providing a safe and healthful workplace for its workers. Employers are required to protect workers from the anticipated hazards associated with the response and recovery operations that workers are likely to conduct. For additional information on Workers' Rights, Employer Responsibilities, and other services OSHA offers, visit OSHA's Compliance Assistance Page, Workers Page and Publications."
