Congress Recognizes National Public Health Week

April 8, 2013- Several members of Congress introduced resolutions that recognized the importance of National Public Health Week, sponsored by American Public Health Association (APHA), which took place April 1-7. The move recognizes public health as key to ensuring safe and healthy communities.

During the week, communities across the U.S. celebrated the contributions of a strong public health system. This year’s theme was “Public Health is ROI: Save Lives, Save Money.” The week highlighted the value of evidence-based public health programs that result in healthier communities and reduced medical costs due to prevention.

“Investing in the well-being of families and communities will build a healthier workforce and reduce overall medical costs and spending," said U.S. Sen. Tom Udall (N.M.). "At a time when Congress needs to make smart budget decisions, we should remember that keeping people healthy is key to growing a stronger economy."

Udall and Reps. Lucille Roybal-Allard (Calif.), Jim McGovern (Mass.) and Bill Cassidy (La.) introduced the resolutions. Joining Udall as original Senate co-sponsors were Sens. Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Ron Wyden (Ore.), Ben Cardin (Md.), John Tester (Mont.) and Richard Blumenthal (Conn.).

“Thanks to the support of these leaders in Congress, this resolution reinforces the compelling case for a strong public health system, especially during difficult budgetary times,” said Georges Benjamin, MD, executive director of the American Public Health Association. “Public health demonstrates a significant return on investment, and I applaud their support of National Public Health Week and of protecting the health of our communities.”
